How does the AHLA Mentoring Program work?
The program connects health lawyers and health law professionals at all career stages to build meaningful professional relationships. Our mentoring platform helps participants:
Network and develop valuable industry connections
Enhance leadership skills and professional development
Identify career planning opportunities
Gain expertise in specific health care law practice areas
Increase involvement in AHLA and other professional associations
Who can participate?
The Mentoring Program is open to all AHLA members and student subscribers.
What time commitment is expected?
We recommend that mentor-mentee pairs:
Connect at least monthly (or more frequently by mutual agreement)
Be available for occasional ad hoc interactions
Discuss communication preferences and scheduling during your initial meeting
Can mentors and mentees meet in person?
Absolutely! Face-to-face meetings are encouraged when possible, whether at AHLA conferences or locally. However, many successful mentoring relationships thrive through virtual connections when geographical distance is a factor.
Are all AHLA Practice Groups represented?
Yes, members from all Practice Groups actively participate in the AHLA Mentoring Program.
Can I participate if I have limited involvement with AHLA?
Definitely! Limited prior involvement with AHLA does not preclude participation. In fact, the program often serves as a gateway to greater engagement with the association and its resources.
Can I be matched with a member who is a mediator or arbitrator so that I can learn more?
Absolutely! Our mentoring portal allows you to search for mentors with specific expertise, including mediation and arbitration. When completing your profile, indicate interest in alternative dispute resolution, and the system will help identify potential mentors.
I'm transitioning from government employment to another practice setting. Can I find a mentor who has made a similar career move?
Yes! The AHLA Mentoring Program is particularly valuable for career transitions. Many of our mentors have successfully navigated shifts between practice settings, including from government roles to private practice, in-house positions, or consulting. When setting up your profile, you can specifically indicate your government background and desire to connect with someone who has made a similar transition. The mentoring portal allows you to search based on professional background and career path, making it easier to find mentors who understand the unique challenges and opportunities in moving from government employment to other health law settings.
How long does a mentor-mentee relationship last?
Mentor-mentee pairings typically last one year. After this period, participants can:
Establish a new pairing through the AHLA mentoring portal
Continue their existing relationship for another year through the portal
Maintain an informal mentoring connection outside the formal program
Is my information kept confidential?
AHLA takes comprehensive measures to safeguard the confidentiality, security, and integrity of all member information.
How will I know when someone has requested that I become their Mentor or Mentee?
You will receive an email with the request, and you will be prompted to accept or reject the request.
What if I need to decline a mentoring request?
You can customize a polite email through our system to decline any mentoring match request. Our goal is to create compatible connections that benefit both participants.
What if I'm not satisfied with my mentor-mentee relationship?
If you have concerns about your mentoring relationship, please email mentoring@americanhealthlaw.org. An AHLA staff member will contact you promptly to address your concerns.
What is expected of mentors and mentees?
After completing your profile, you'll gain access to comprehensive resources through AHLA's website and portal. These materials outline expectations and best practices. For additional questions, contact mentoring@americanhealthlaw.org.
Why should I participate?

Enhanced involvement in AHLA
For mentors:
Opportunity to give back to the profession
Leadership development
Fresh perspectives
